A Loss of Power

"Let Greeks be Greeks, and Women what they are.
Men have precedency and still excel;
It is but vain unjustly to wage war.
Men can do best, and Women know it well
Preeminence in all and each is yours;
Yet grant some small acknowledgment of ours."

- Anne Bradstreet "The Prologue"

Analysis

       Anne Bradstreet is well known for her struggles with the Puritan society. She loved her faith and respected the roles within for women; however she did entirely agree with them. This poem, particularly this passage, addresses the popular feminist topic of power. In a few short lines Bradstreet eloquently addresses the position of women in society, and the struggles of relenting power to the male hierarchy. She used her poetry as the vessel to express her frustrations and opinions on women in her day and age, and perfectly depicts the loss of power.
